An article from Complex.com today has the headline “Did Mark Cuban Buy Nets.com to Take Shots at the Brooklyn Nets and their Owner Mikhail Prokhorov?”
Well if the article writer had done his homework, I would say NO, Mark Cuban hasn’t bought the Nets.com domain name.
Doing a simple whois using domaintools.com, You can see the domain is registered to
Registrant:
Cyber Mesa Computer Systems
4200 Rodeo Rd
Santa Fe, NM 87507
US
Domain Name: NETS.COM
The domain name nets.com didnt have its own site for many years instead it just pointed to the company website cybermesa.com until this year when the site got a simple one page website stating the following…
Looking for the New Jersey Nets?
Looking for the Brooklyn Nets?
They’re not here…but they SHOULD be!
After all, there’s just one team: The Nets!
Just like how the Dallas Cowboys should have owned Cowboys.com and it is now dating site.
The New Jersey Nets or Brooklyn Nets should have bought Nets.com years ago, The owner is probally hoping to finally spark some interest from The Nets, If you look at the NBA links on the left of your screen you can see a link to all the NBA teams appart from Oklahoma City Thunder every other team owns there .com domain, Hawks.com, Celtics.com, Bobcats.com, Mavs.com, Lakers.com, Clippers.com etc.
You can read the original article below from the writer at Complex.com but I would say Mark Cuban hasn’t bought Nets.com, maybe he will now, I don’t believe he is the current owner of Nets.com
The article goes on to say “Mark Cuban hasn’t been a happy camper this past summer and rightfully so. After losing out on Deron Williams when he decided to go back to the Nets instead of joining his hometown team, the Dallas Mavericks, Cuban took it to the Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov whenever he could.
In what could be Cuban’s most recent jab at the Russian billionaire, it seems as though the Mavs owner has bought the rights to the domain name of Nets.com. Across the middle of the page, the site has a message reading
“Looking for the New Jersey Nets? Looking for the Brooklyn Nets? They’re not here…but they SHOULD be!
After all, there’s just one team: The Nets!”
In the lower left corner, there’s a picture of Mark Cuban sticking his tongue out. Wonder who that’s for? Under that image, you’ll see a copyright symbol next to the name of David Yellen. A quick Google search will show you that Mr. Yellen has snapped many pics of Cuban in the past. But wait, that isn’t the best part.
On the bottom of the page, there is a message in Russian, which was probably meant for Prokhorov, and it reads, more or less:
“Michael, have you noticed? Vilena wondered…”
As you probably already know, Michael is referencing Mikhail while the Vilena part is a reference to a Russian prostitute. Now, what you may not know is that back in January 2007, Prokhorov was arrested on suspicion of arranging prostitutes for his guests. Even though the billionaire was cleared of the charge and the case was dismissed two years later, it looks like Cuban is trying to rehash some old moments.”
Not sure if that is such a good idea. UDRP waiting to happen?
